Poisons in Dogs

Make Sure You Are Careful with These Common Poisons in Dogs

Your dog may see healthy and strong, but it is unfortunately unable to handle a lot of the same things you are. In fact, many substances that humans use are outright poisons for dogs, and you need to be very careful about storing anything that could have a harmful effect on your pet. These poisons include foods, medications, and cleaning supplies that humans use freely and often have in their homes. Hollywood Cat and Dog Hospital in West Hollywood, CA, want you to be aware of what could harm your dog if you are not cautious.

Poisons in Dogs

Food and Medications Top the List

Many foods are poisonous to dogs, even though they may appear to want to eat them. Xylitol, a sweetener, has become the bane of dog owners everywhere because the substance is so toxic to dogs. Unfortunately, xylitol is appearing in more and more foods, including peanut butter, which dogs love. If you buy peanut butter that has xylitol in it, you need to clearly label the jar as one that is not to be given to the dog. Better yet, avoid brands that contain xylitol altogether.

Chocolate is another well-known poison, as are grapes, raisins, garlic, onions, many nuts, citrus peels, and even yeasted raw dough. Alcohol is a terrible poison for dogs, too.

Over-the-counter medications are also a risk, and you must keep yours away from dogs completely. By the way, it does not matter how "natural" the medication is; even herbal meds can be poisonous. Marijuana has become a huge problem in the vet community because of its toxic effect on dogs when they ingest it; many find pieces of edibles while on walks, for example, and scarf them down without the owners knowing. While many dogs recover, the symptoms are still scary.

Cleaning products are another danger for dogs. Properly store all laundry, household, and outdoor chemicals away from your pets to ensure they are safe.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "Wow! Thanks to all the staff at Anderson Vet Clinic. I feel like you all truly love what you do! My kitty, Lola and I always have such a pleasant experience when we come in. Fortunately, it’s usually just for a check-up, but I would not leave Lola in anyone else’s hands but yours. Thank you for your caring commitment!"
Maya Smith / Los Angeles, CA
  • "I have benefited tremendously from the care my pet received from Dr. Anderson."
John Doe / San Diego, CA
  • "Fabio wasn’t eating the food I was giving him and I didn’t feel he was getting the nutrition he needed. Thanks to Dr. Anderson, he evaluated Fabio and his current diet to make some recommendations and now Fabio has gone from barely eating to finishing his meals and he looks healthier than ever. You clearly are an expert in your field...thanks so much!"
